AI Chat

OpenCharts AI Chat is Theo, a conversational AI assistant with 11 specialized modes (Fast, Think, Research, Code, Voice, Consensus, Image, Video, Social/Calendar, Learn, Explore) that answers questions, brainstorms, and creates real projects — flowcharts, whiteboards, notes, presentations, podcasts, code, and more — from a single prompt.

Getting Started

Open Chat from the sidebar (the sparkles icon at the top). Type your message or pick a quick action pill, then press Enter or click send.

Each conversation is automatically saved so you can return to it later via the chat sidebar on the left.

Model Modes

Switch between three modes using the toggle pills above the input. Each mode uses a different AI model optimized for different tasks.

Fast

Theo Fast — quick answers, brainstorming, simple edits.

Think

Theo Think — deep reasoning, complex analysis, detailed plans.

Image

Theo Imagine — generate images, illustrations, logos, and visual content from text prompts.

Creating Projects via Chat

The AI can create real OpenCharts projects from your prompts. Just describe what you need and the AI will generate it with nodes, edges, slides, or rich text — then give you a link to open it.

Flowcharts

Describe a process and the AI generates a complete flowchart project.

Whiteboards

Ask for mind maps, wireframes, or brainstorm boards.

Notes

Request meeting notes, summaries, or documentation — created as a Notes project.

Presentations

Outline a topic and get a slide deck with titles and bullet points.

Image Generation

Switch to Image mode (the aperture icon) to generate images with Theo Imagine. Simply describe what you want and the AI will create it directly in the chat.

What you can create

  • Photos, illustrations, and artwork in any style
  • Logos, icons, and branding assets
  • UI mockups and wireframes
  • Multiple variations in a single response ("create 4 options")
  • Iterative edits ("make the background darker", "add a border")

Working with generated images

  • Copy — hover over an image and click Copy to add it to your clipboard
  • Download — save the image as a PNG file
  • Import — add the image directly into a Notes, Flowchart, or Whiteboard project
  • Expand — click any image to view it full-screen

Compose with reference images

Attach one or more images to your message in Image mode and Theo will compose them into the result instead of redrawing them. Great for side-by-side cards, logo on a colored background, before/after, collage, and similar layouts. Theo keeps the upload pixels intact — only redrawing when you explicitly ask (“reimagine this in watercolor”, etc.).

  • If you picked Theo Imagine, multi-image asks use Theo Imagine’s edit endpoint when available; otherwise they fall back to Theo Creative (the only engine today that supports multi-image composition).
  • Up to 5 reference images per message.
  • Supported formats: PNG, JPG, WebP, GIF.
You can also generate images from Fast or Think mode — the AI will use thegenerate_imagetool to create images without switching modes.

Inline Tables

Ask the AI to "create a comparison table" or "list features in a table" and it will render a structured table directly in the chat. These are displayed inline — no separate project is created.

Attaching Spreadsheets

Drop a .xlsx, .csv, or .tsv file onto the chat composer and Theo parses it into a markdown table that goes straight into the prompt — no binary upload, no manual paste.

Templates with title rows and merged headers

Insurance census files, HR rosters, finance templates, and similar real-world workbooks usually start with a logo / title row, an instructions row, and a merged "Employee Information" banner above the actual column headers. Theo now skips those preamble rows automatically, detects the real header row, and expands merged section banners into compound names like Employee Info / Last Name.

When auto-detection bows out

If the layout is too irregular for the heuristic to lock onto a header row, Theo falls back to a positional grid view (rows labelled by their Excel row number, columns labelled A, B, C …) so the model still sees every cell and can reason about the structure with you.

Fastest path for very irregular sheets:save the worksheet you care about as a CSV (File → Save As → CSV) and attach that instead. CSV has no merged cells or hidden columns to interpret, so it always lands cleanly.

Sharing Code Artifacts

When Theo generates a code artifact in Code mode, you can share it with anyone using a public link. Click the Share button in the code preview panel or on the inline code card.

The share link opens a branded preview page where recipients can see the live output and browse the source code — no account required.

Theo Suggest (predictive completions)

As you type in the chat composer, Theo Suggest shows up to five short completions of what you might be asking for in a dropdown below the input. The first matches come from your own recent conversations; if nothing matches, Theo predicts a few fresh continuations.

How to use it

  • ↑ / ↓ — highlight a suggestion.
  • Tab or click — fill the composer with the selected text. Press Enter to send.
  • Esc — dismiss the dropdown for the current text. Type one more character and it reopens.

When Theo Suggest stays out of the way

  • Fewer than 4 characters typed, or the input ends in a space.
  • You're dictating, have attachments staged, or have a project chip attached — the intent is already clear.
  • Theo Stealth (private mode) is active — history and AI suggestions are skipped entirely.
  • The conversation is close to its context-window limit.

Inline ghost text

When Theo Suggest is on, the most-likely continuation also appears as faint grey text inline after your cursor (ChatGPT / Copilot style). The ghost reads from the same ranked list as the dropdown, so your own past conversations always win over a fresh prediction.

  • Tab or at the end of the line accepts the ghost.
  • Keep typing to ignore it — the ghost re-resolves on every keystroke.
  • Ghost is hidden when the cursor isn't at the end of the line, when the input wraps onto multiple lines, when you have text selected, or in any of the dropdown's skip cases (dictation, attachments, private mode, etc.).
Picking a suggestion never sends the message — it only fills the composer. You still need to press Enter (or click Send) to ship it.

Conversation History

All conversations are saved automatically. The sidebar shows your recent chats grouped by time. Click any conversation to resume it.

You can delete conversations from the sidebar using the trash icon on hover.

AI Credits

Chat uses your AI credit balance. Think modeuses more credits per message than Fast mode due to the larger model. You can check your remaining credits in Settings → Billing.

Try the quick actions! On a new chat, the welcome screen shows suggested prompts for flowcharts, notes, presentations, and brainstorming. Click one to get started instantly.
