Theo Agent vs Claude Code

Anthropic's terminal coding agent: repository-aware, extensible through skills, hooks, subagents and MCP

Claude Code is a coding harness an engineer shapes around a repository with instructions, skills, hooks and subagents. Theo Agent is the colleague that keeps that repository context and then leaves the terminal: it wakes on a schedule, answers people, and reports what it did when nobody was watching.

By OpenCharts TeamPublished

Theo Agent and Claude Code can both read a repository's own instructions, work in a real clone, edit files, run commands and tests, and open a pull request. Claude Code is the stronger coding harness for a developer who is present: its terminal workflow, repository instruction files, skills, hooks, subagents and MCP ecosystem make it deeply programmable. Theo Agent is built for the work nobody is watching. The same worker can answer email, Slack, texts and calls, run several named jobs on schedules, wait for a page to change, ask a structured question mid-run, earn autonomy one kind at a time, write a receipt for every run, surface every blocked worker in one queue, and publish a finished run as a safe read-only page.

The verdict

Where each one wins

Theo Agent wins at
  • Always-on work started by schedules, inbound messages, calls, page changes and long-lived missions
  • Reach outside a terminal: a phone number, email address, calendar, Slack, Telegram and a REST API
  • A choice of engines from several labs per worker, with per-job routing, or your own provider key
  • Autonomy earned one kind of action at a time, plus org-wide approval rules
  • Receipts that name sources, messages, teammates, credits and earned-trust actions
  • A cross-worker needs-you queue and a catch-up line when you return
  • Editable decks, documents, sheets, apps and media in the same workspace
  • A safe public snapshot of a finished run
Claude Code
Claude Code still wins at
  • A mature terminal-first coding harness that stays close to the repository and developer
  • Repository customization through instruction files, skills, hooks, commands, subagents and MCP
  • Interactive code review and debugging while an engineer is present
Together

Use Claude Code when you are at the terminal and Theo Agent for the repository work that should happen while nobody is there. Theo Agent also reads AGENTS.md, CLAUDE.md or Theo.md when it opens a repository, so the same project guidance can govern both.

When to choose

The right pick for your team

Choose Theo Agent when…

  • The task should start from an inbox, schedule, phone call or page change rather than from your terminal.
  • The worker must continue into customer communication, calendars, sheets or presentations after the code lands.
  • Your team needs one place to see every worker that is blocked and what it needs.
  • You want earned autonomy, org rules, receipts and a public run snapshot.
Claude Code

Choose Claude Code when…

  • You are at the keyboard and want the deepest terminal-first coding loop.
  • Your repository already has a large investment in custom skills, hooks and subagents.
  • You want to inspect, steer and debug the coding loop turn by turn.

Repository instructions
Reads AGENTS.md first, then CLAUDE.md, then Theo.md when the workspace opens; repository guidance never grants a permission
Reads CLAUDE.md and scoped instruction files as a core part of the harness
Installed skills
A worker can opt into the operator's installed skills, bounded in its persona, plus procedures learned by being shown once
Skills, commands, hooks and MCP servers are core customization units
Working in a real repository
A persistent workspace per worker with clone, terminal, browser and files; branches, commits, pushes and pull requests
Works directly in the developer's repository and terminal
When nobody is watching
Schedules, inbound channels, routines, page watches and missions wake the worker; presence and the review queue report what needs you
Can run non-interactively, but the primary workflow starts from a developer session
How people reach it
In-app chat, Slack, Telegram, SMS, email, calls, REST API and a native phone tab
Terminal, editor and automation entry points
Asking you a question
A structured pause with up to four options or free text; answering authorizes nothing
Clarifying questions in the interactive terminal session
Approvals and autonomy
Worker posture plus org rules; whole-plan approval; autonomy earned per action class; deleting never earnable
Permission modes and command policies configured in the harness
Audit and spend
A receipt per run plus a per-turn credit gate that pauses and resumes
Terminal transcript, tool output and provider usage reporting
Multi-agent work
Rooms, checked delegation contracts, live steering, stop-and-keep-partial and bounded concurrency
Subagents with specialized prompts, tools and contexts
Share the result
A frozen public page of the plan, steps and artifact names, stripped of recipients, private files and company knowledge
Share the branch, pull request or terminal transcript

Pricing and migration

What it costs, what it takes

Pricing

Pricing snapshot

Theo Agent is included from OpenCharts Starter at $9.99/mo, with Pro at $24.99/mo and Teams at $14.99 per user per month; runs spend the same AI credits every other Theo surface uses, and a dedicated SMS number is a monthly add-on. Claude Code is included with the vendor's paid individual and team plans, and API usage can be billed separately. List pricing at time of writing (September 2026).
Migration

Migrating from Claude Code

The tools can share repository guidance. Keep AGENTS.md or CLAUDE.md in the repository, create a Theo Agent worker from the Software engineer starter, connect the repository, and give it the standing job that should happen without a terminal open. Use Claude Code for interactive sessions and the worker for schedules, inboxes and long waits.
Questions

Frequently asked questions

Is Theo Agent a replacement for Claude Code?
Not for every developer. Claude Code is a deeper terminal-first coding harness. Theo Agent is the worker for jobs that start or continue while nobody is at the terminal, and for work that crosses from code into customer messages, calendars, documents and schedules.
Does Theo Agent read CLAUDE.md or AGENTS.md?
Yes. When a code workspace opens it reads AGENTS.md first, then CLAUDE.md, then Theo.md, with a bounded size. The file is guidance and never permission: it cannot widen which repositories, commands or actions the operator allowed.
Can Theo Agent use my installed skills?
Yes, per worker and opt-in. The Knowledge tab can let a worker read your active installed skills as a bounded procedures block. A worker can also learn a task by watching you do it once. The default is off, so an existing worker never receives procedures you did not assign.
Which one is better when I am not at my computer?
Theo Agent. Its primary model is nobody watching: a schedule, inbound email, Slack message, call, page change or mission wakes it, and it appears in the needs-you queue only when it is blocked. Claude Code is strongest as a developer's active coding harness.
Can I use both on the same repository?
Yes. Put the shared guidance in AGENTS.md or CLAUDE.md, use Claude Code for an interactive coding session, and give Theo Agent the standing work that should run on a schedule or continue while you are away. Both work through branches and pull requests, so the repository remains the handoff.

Hire a worker that keeps working

Give a Theo Agent worker a goal, the tools it may use, and an approval policy. It works within those boundaries and reports back. Included from the Starter plan, with the whole workspace alongside it.
